Recruitment & Retention

About Us

At the EPIC Inventory Summit in January 2022, the EPIC Board of Directors elected to form a committee tasked with addressing the recruitment and retention crisis impacting equine veterinary medicine. The committee started brainstorming on how to engage the EPIC network and its unique attributes to revitalize the stream of veterinarians into equine practice. The committee aims to provide the resources necessary to ensure quality, real-world experience accessible to students through collaboration with equine practices and industry partners.

An EPIC Focus on Recruitment and Retention

Our Purpose

To respond to the immediate recruitment and retention crisis impacting equine veterinary medicine by engaging the EPIC network and their unique position to promote and encourage the entry and retention of veterinarians in equine practice.

Our Vision

To connect students with equine practices dedicated to promoting the true culture of, and opportunities within, equine veterinary medicine.

Our Mission

To develop the resources necessary to ensure quality, real-world experience accessible to students through collaboration with equine practices and industry partners who share this common goal.

EPIC Recruitment and Retention Initiatives

•, a website designed to facilitate transparent evaluations of equine internships and externships
  • Creation of a directory of EPIC members who serve as ambassadors for equine practice at each veterinary school
  • Implementation of a connected, nationwide network of educational events for equine veterinary students

Currently, the committee is looking for EPIC members who are interested in volunteering as vet school ambassadors. If you or an associate from your practice are already connected with or interested in engaging veterinary students at one of these schools, please reach out to any of the committee members listed below. The committee will provide the resources to structure the conversations with prospective equine students about the life and culture of equine practice in a positive and honest light.

EPIC Recruitment and Retention Committee:

EPIC is excited to officially announce the launch of– a site where veterinary externs and interns can review their practice experiences. This effort was born from a brainstorming session held at the 2022 EPIC Summit and is the product of our Recruitment and Retention Committee.

We are thrilled to promote this site as part of the ongoing efforts to keep equine-interested students and vets IN equine practice! They are undoubtedly our most important asset (yes, even more than inventory)! Allowing them to share their experiences worldwide will help drive students and interns toward practices that will help develop them and retain them in the industry.

If you host interns and externs, please create an account at and add your practice to the site. If you have former externs and interns, reach out to them to let them know about the site and encourage them to leave a review. You can also help by adding a link to to relevant sections of your website and other advertising efforts.

Thank you and we look forward to answering any questions you might have!

Developed and shared by EPIC members, the resources below are yours to use to facilitate conversations with vet students.
